Guest Lecture by Mr.Handa

On the afternoon of Saturday-September 9 1999, Mr. Handa gave the students of B.M.S at M.M.K. College an enlightening talk on 'How To Become Good Managers'.

Mr. Handa is a very senior and a very well accomplished man who has had a lot of experience in the field of Management.

WHAT IS REQUIRED TO MAKE A GOOD MANAGER?

To start with; a manager is a person who manages an organisation including setting objectives and handling resources. He needs to be dynamic since, resources, objectives and people change over time and so should the strategies adopted by a manager.

There Are Three Basic Things Required To Be A Successful Manager:

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ATTITUDE.

  1. KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge essentially refers to technical or functional knowledge.
  2. Technical not in terms of Engineering but in terms of the specific functions.

e.g. For an accountant, knowledge of accounts would be treated as functional knowledge.

How much ever a student studies his books most of this knowledge is acquired on the job itself.Hence, it is very essential for a student of management to understand the basic concepts very clearly. As setting dimensions to the area of study,Mr.Handa suggested that we students study Psychology,Economics and other subjects related to Human Nature. Also, the knowledge of Probabilty and Statistics is very necessary as a manager faces a high level of uncertainty in the corporate world.

  3. SKILLS: Skills can be taught and transmitted while a few may be inherited.Of the many skills that a manager must know, Mr.Handa listed a few:

ANALYTICAL SKILLS: This is the most important skill required by a manager. To analyse is to think clearly,to search for alternatives, to weigh the pros and cons, and to choose the right alternative. It may be synonymous with intelligence but,an intelligent person may not always be analytical but an anlytical person is always treated as an intelligent person.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:A manager is continuously in touch with people. He works and interacts with them hence good communication skills are required to be able to understand people clearly.

INTER-PERSONAL SKILLS:We may have to deal with either of the following people:1) Leader ,2) Follower or 3)Peer.

Inter-personal skills are required to be able to effectively deal with the different types of people that we come across in the course of life.

A fair balance of all the above skills is required to be present to achieve success in any field.

ATTITUDES:An Attitude is the opinion or way of thinking of an individual. It is very important for an individual to have the right kind of approach towards a given situation. If a manager of an organisation has the right attitude he will be very successful in keeping his employees/ subordinates motivated to work better.A positive attitude will reflect self confidence and a broad outlook.

Finally Mr. Handa advised the students to work on their Emotional Quotient .It helps in maintaining relationships and building new ones. Also to use our

'COMMON SENSE'! while dealing with various tasks.

The lecture ende with a note of thanks and flowers and chocolates which were presented to Mr. Handa as a token of our appreciation.
